The Production of Carbon Black in the CIS

     Carbon black is a superfine amorphous form of carbon manufactured on a commercial scale and widely used in the chemical industry and other fields. Carbon black is applied as a reinforcing agent in rubbers. Tyres and general mechanical rubber goods consume approximately 85% of the world output of carbon black; the rest is used in the plastics industry, paints and coatings sector, metallurgy as well as in the manufacturing of insulating materials and glass.The world carbon black market flourishes enjoying a year-on-year increase of 4.5-5%. In spite of the development of various substitutes, this trend is likely to remain in the future. The article examines in detail the carbon black production in the CIS in general, and in Russia and Ukraine in particular.
