Kazakhstan Petrochemical Industry Waiting for Sweeping Changes![]() Today Kazakhstan is rapidly developing its chemical industry. Kazakhstan's three refineries -- the Atyrau, Pavlodar and Shymkent plants -- processed a total of 14.2m tonnes of crude oil in 2012. But they are unable to fully meet domestic demand, leaving the country obliged to import Russian fuel. Russian petrol and diesel met some 30% of the Kazakh demand for high-specification fuels in 2012. In a bid to cut dependence on Russian imports and to raise fuel quality, Kazakhstan has launched a comprehensive modernisation programme, including upgrades of existing units and construction of new ones.
