Russian Tall Oil Production and Market

Tall oil (tallol), a dark liquid with a pungent odour, is a mixture of organic compounds, chiefly, of unsaturated and fatty acids. It is produced via treatment of sulphate soap by sulphuric acid. Having enormous forest resources, Russia at first glance should have developed wood processing. In fact, the state of the pulp and paper industry, which among other products manufactures tall oil is rather poor. Why does tall oil production go down given that domestic demand for tall oil and its derivatives is quite high? We will try to answer this question in the present article.
