Manufacture and Consumption of Thionyl Chloride in CIS![]()
Lanxess Basic Chemicals (Germany) is the biggest global producer of thionyl chloride. The company has two thionyl chloride plants in Germany and in India. Another Indian company Transpek Industry is the second major SOCl2 maker. This list is added with a Swiss thionyl chloride enterprise SF-Chem AG which was acquired in 2007 by CABB GmbH (Germany), one of the leading producers of monochloroacetic acid globally. Russia and Ukraine do not manufacture thionyl chloride, satisfying the demand for this product by means of imports. The Russian market receives 40-45 tonnes of this product every year. In 2009 Russian customers were supplied with 44.2 tonnes of thionyl chloride, 59% of which were supplied by Lanxess and the remaining part – by Transpek Industry.
