World Polyvinylidene Chloride Production

Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) was one of the first polymers to be commercialized. Due to low gas and vapor permeability, it is widely used in the manufacture of food and consumer goods packaging, as well as in areas where high resistance to moisture and aggressive medium is required. Currently, the world output of PVDC is about 200,000 tonnes. Despite a range of useful properties of polyvinylidene chloride, there are only few producers of this polymer in the world. Four major manufacturers are Dow, SolVin, Asahi and Kureha.
The most rapidly consumption of polyvinylidene chloride increases in Asia, especially in countries with poor refrigeration infrastructure. Ability to store food at ambient temperatures is undoubtedly one of the main driving forces of PVDC market development.
