After a competition among 73 regions of Russia, the Republic of Tatarstan was chosen as the location of one out of two projected special economic zones.
Tatarstan was chosen as the SEZ location for several reasons. Firstly, it is regarded as one of the most economically developed and politically stable regions in Russia. Secondly, the nearby cities of Elabuga, with a population of over 70,000 people, and Naberezhnyje Chelny, with a population of over half a million people, offer modern infrastructure.
The construction of the SEZ began in 2006 and was completed on 20 November 2007 with an opening ceremony.
The number of companies-residents of Alabuga may rise from 9 to 35-40 by 2012. The number of working places is forecast to reach 16,000, and the total investments are supposed to exceed USD 2bn.
