There are only nine polystyrene (PS) manufacturers in the Commonwealth of Independent States, seven of which are based in Russia. Plastik JSC, Sibur’s subsidiary in the Tula Region, is a sole manufacturer of ABS resins in the CIS. Going by the 2007 results, the total production output of polystyrene and ABS resins in Russia made 275,000 tonnes.
The Russian market for polystyrene and ABS plastics has been developing by leaps and bounds. The PS market capacity in Russia improved by 2.7 times in 2000-2007 up to 368,700 tonnes. During this period the demand for this polymer went up by 106.6% (more than double), while the rise in demand for ABS resins was just 13.8%. As of 2007 results, Russia’s share in the world demand for PS is 1.88%.
