Among the CIS countries, only Russia and Ukraine boast capacities for the commercial production of naphthalene carried out at coke-chemical plants. Currently, there are eight companies in Russia plus two enterprises in Ukraine that are manufacturing the product. The rest CIS countries act as naphthalene importers.
The present-day production of naphthalene in the CIS can be characterised as export-oriented. The product finds a ready market abroad, first of all, in China and India. So, in the near term, the CIS coke-chemical plants are unlikely to reduce their output of naphthalene despite the fact that many phthalic anhydride producers have switched to the ortho-xylene process. The production of naphthalene will be encouraged by the booming construction sector ready to consume additives to concrete and engineering mixtures. And the paint and coating industry is to make a significant contribution in naphthalene consumption as well .
