The First International Conference Gasoline 2008The First International Conference Gasoline 2008 was held at the Baltschug Kempinski Moscow hotel on 18 April. The conference highlighted the most recent developments and future trends in the Russian petrol market. The quality of Russian motor fuels is now becoming an urgent issue. Although Russia is one of the global leaders in terms of oil reserves and oil production, the domestic market suffers a deficit of high-quality motor fuels. In the early 2008, the government approved technical legislations, according to which low-octane petrols, including the ones with octane numbers of 80 and 92, are to be banned in three years. The toughening of ecological requirements forces Russian petrol producers to upgrade their manufacturing facilities. High-performance fuels need a high level of purification and, consequently, new manufacturing processes. The main issues raised at the conference were as follows: the upgrading of Russian oil refineries, the introduction of the new standards Euro-3 and Euro-4 in Russia, and the use of fuel additives such as MMA.
